On Wednesday, Duke Football faced the departure of its starting quarterback, Riley Leonard, marking the second or third time in 2023 that the talented player declared his intent to transfer.
Having played a crucial role in Duke's remarkable improvement over the past two seasons, Leonard steered the team to a 9-4 record in the previous season, drawing significant NFL attention in early 2023. Unfortunately, injuries curtailed his season, depriving him of nearly half the games.
Following a strong start that propelled the Blue Devils into national rankings with four consecutive wins, Leonard's season took a turn after suffering an ankle injury against Notre Dame on September 30. This injury would significantly impact both player and team, limiting Leonard to just three more appearances. Duke closed the year with five losses in seven games, salvaging a 7-5 campaign through a player-led rally against Pittsburgh. Former head coach Mike Elko's abrupt departure for Texas A&M further added uncertainty regarding the team's bowl game and the upcoming offseason.
Leonard's entry into the transfer portal, along with defensive back Jaden Watkins and defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles, indicates his likely destination, with South Bend emerging as a strong possibility. This move mirrors the path taken by Leonard's friend and former rival at Wake Forest, Sam Hartman, who joined the Irish for his final season.
Leonard demonstrated gratitude in his departure from Durham, expressing it on social media: "I'm grateful that Duke is a place I could be myself, and I'll never take for granted all that I learned throughout my time here." Acknowledging the role of his classmates and the transformative environment at Duke, Leonard emphasized the lasting impact of the relationships he forged.
Addressing his teammates directly, Leonard conveyed his deep connection, stating, "You guys are my brothers and always will be. I know that you will succeed in whatever path you choose to take." Recognizing their work ethic and dedication, he thanked them for shared moments, both positive and challenging.
Before concluding his departure announcement, Leonard provided insight into his initial choice of Duke: "I chose Duke because I wanted a school where I could be around those who are the best at what they do." He acknowledged the daily push to compete and improve, ultimately making the difficult decision to leave, believing he is better prepared for future challenges, both on and off the field.
